IAM members from across Alabama convened in Huntsville for the IAM Union Alabama State Council meeting, which brought together union leaders, community partners, and political candidates to address key issues affecting working families in the state.

The meeting began with a welcome from Michelle Watkins, a member of the Huntsville City Council representing District 1. Delegates participated in discussions focused on legislative priorities, organizing strategies, and increasing political engagement. Main topics included defending service contract jobs, expanding opportunities in manufacturing, advocating for union rights, and ensuring that workers have representation at both state and federal levels.

“When working people in Alabama stand together, there is no force more powerful,” said Rickie Langford, President of the IAM Union Alabama State Council. “This meeting was about uniting our voices and building our strength across the political aisles for the road ahead.”

Speakers at the event included several state legislators such as State Representative Anthony Daniels (District 53) and State Representative Laura Hall (District 19), along with Dr. Will Boyd, candidate for Governor of Alabama; U.S. Representative Brandon Moore, candidate for U.S. Senate; Loren Almeroth from IAM’s national office; Galen Bullock of EBS; DeLane Adams from IAM Communications; Nicole Fears from IAM Human Rights; Frederick Ross of IAM Benefit Trust; Pam Evans from IAM W3 Education; Helena Thornton representing the Southern Territory of IAM International; Pat Keahey of Keahey Law Firm; and Jacob Morrison with North Alabama Area Labor Council (AFL-CIO).

These speakers addressed challenges facing workers in Alabama and emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen labor representation throughout the state.

Delegates were also updated on developments regarding a government shutdown and discussed ongoing efforts by IAM to secure back pay for federal contract employees impacted by stalled negotiations on Capitol Hill.

The Alabama State Council remains an important force shaping political and legislative advocacy for union members statewide. Attendees left with renewed motivation to mobilize around these issues.

Members serving on the current Executive Board include Rickie Langford as President, Gavin Brunner as Secretary Treasurer, James Tate as Vice President North alongside Joe Cleveland in that role, Anthony Holton as Vice President South with Michelle Hunt also serving as Vice President South.
