Baptist Health names Dr. Peter A. Abdelmalik director of inpatient general neurology

Board-certified neurologist Peter A. Abdelmalik, M.D., Ph.D., has joined Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care as director of inpatient general neurology. Dr. Abdelmalik will focus on the acute care of hospitalized patients with neurological conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. He brings expertise in neurocritical care and vascular neurology.

Dr. Abdelmalik holds certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both neurology and neurocritical care, as well as telehealth stroke certification from the American Heart Association.

Before joining Baptist Health, Dr. Abdelmalik was an assistant professor of neurology at the State University of New York, University at Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biological Sciences. He also worked as a neurointensivist at Kaleida Health’s Buffalo General Medical Center and served as a teleneurology and telestroke consultant for Adjacent Health in Norfolk, Virginia.

Dr. Abdelmalik earned his Ph.D. in neurophysiology/neuropharmacology from the University of Toronto and his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. His clinical training includes an internal medicine internship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a neurology residency at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, and a neurocritical care fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He has published research in medical journals and books and presented findings at scientific symposiums. He serves on editorial boards for several medical publications and is active in professional societies.

Dr. Abdelmalik stated: “I employ a multidisciplinary treatment approach that focuses on immediate medical stabilization, prevention of secondary injury, psychological support and rehabilitation.”

He will treat hospitalized patients at Baptist Health Baptist Hospital and provide follow-up care at 8900 North Kendall Drive in Miami.
