Florida International University (FIU) is preparing to deploy more than 100 citizen volunteers as part of its 10th annual Sea Level Solutions Day, scheduled for October 8. The event coincides with the year’s highest seasonal water events, known as King Tides, and is organized by FIU’s Institute of Environment and its Sea Level Solutions Team.
During the initiative, volunteers will use kits provided by FIU to measure water depth, salinity, and water quality in flood-prone neighborhoods across Miami-Dade County. Participants will document their findings and upload the results into a shared database. This information aims to assist scientists and policymakers in understanding the extent of flooding, monitoring changes over time, and developing strategies for climate adaptation in South Florida.
According to FIU, “Sea Level Solutions Day has grown into one of FIU’s signature public science events, shedding a light on how sea level rising is affecting South Florida.” The data collected so far have shown significant flooding in local communities—sometimes exceeding two feet—and highlight the need for localized resilience planning.
The Institute of Environment continues to broaden its research efforts related to this program. Areas of study include water quality issues, saltwater intrusion, mangrove and coral resilience, and urban flooding models.
The event is open to new volunteers who wish to participate during the King Tide at multiple locations throughout Miami-Dade County.
