Florida International University (FIU) has been named the top university in Florida for the second consecutive year, according to The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2026 Best Colleges in the U.S. rankings. Nationally, FIU moved up to No. 54 from No. 77 last year and is ranked No. 22 among public universities.

The Wall Street Journal’s methodology evaluates how well colleges prepare students for financial success, focusing on factors such as graduation rates, post-graduation salaries, and the overall classroom experience. The rankings place particular emphasis on institutions that improve students’ life trajectories.

“This ranking reaffirms what our students and alumni already know: FIU delivers results,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “We are providing an incredible education that transforms lives, fuels innovation, and strengthens Florida’s workforce and economy. To be recognized as the state’s top university for the second year in a row is a testament to our faculty, our staff, and our students.”

FIU has also received other recent recognitions at both state and national levels:

– For three years running, FIU has led Florida in performance-based funding metrics that assess student success.
– In last week’s U.S. News & World Report rankings, FIU was listed among the top 50 public universities at No. 46 and was ranked first nationally for social mobility.
– Washington Monthly placed FIU at No. 8 nationwide.
– Niche ranked FIU No. 21 among Top Public Universities (No. 70 nationally).
– Washington Monthly also named FIU as the best value (“Best Bang for the Buck”) in the Southeast.
– FIU is one of only 21 institutions nationwide with both Carnegie R1 status—indicating very high research activity—and an Opportunity Colleges & Universities designation.

“The Wall Street Journal rankings are focused on outcomes that matter most to students and their families – career prospects, earnings and experiences,” said Elizabeth M. Béjar, FIU Provost, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “To be recognized once again as Florida’s top university confirms that FIU is excelling where it counts: preparing students for successful careers, advancing impactful research, and ensuring a return on investment that transforms lives.”
