Florida International University (FIU) has welcomed its largest incoming freshman class in the institution’s history for the 2024-2025 academic year. Nearly 6,000 freshmen have started at FIU this summer and fall, setting a new record for the university.

This growth follows a significant rise in applications, with FIU reporting more than a 10% increase in applications for summer and fall admissions compared to previous years. Applications came from all 50 states, and early admission acceptances also reached an all-time high.

“Demand for an FIU education is soaring,” said Jody Glassman, assistant vice president of Enrollment and University Admissions. “And our newest Panthers are proof of that. The Class of 2029 is intelligent, involved and committed to excellence. These students are excited to be Panthers because they know that FIU will help them achieve their dreams.”

The incoming class includes students with strong academic credentials: the average GPA is 4.28, and the average SAT score is 1300. Forty-four percent of these freshmen are first-generation college students. Almost half have chosen STEM majors, particularly in health and technology fields.

Students come from 44 states and 46 countries, but most—89%—are Florida residents from across the state. According to Glassman, this reflects both FIU’s growing reputation among Florida students and alumni impact on the state’s workforce; many graduates remain in Florida after completing their studies at FIU.

Among those starting at FIU are six National Merit Scholars, seven Silver Knight Honorable Mentions, valedictorians, as well as students recognized for community service by local media and public officials such as Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Freshmen interests span marine conservation, space exploration, computer science, education, entertainment and arts, engineering, hospitality management and other fields.

Many members of the class have engaged in extensive community service through mission trips abroad or local initiatives such as food drives or volunteering at hospitals or animal shelters. Service-oriented clubs at FIU were cited by several new students as a key reason for choosing the university.

FIU News plans to highlight stories from some of these freshmen throughout the first week of the fall semester.

Sebastian Lopez is one example from this year’s cohort who plans to study ophthalmology after being inspired by his own experience with a temporary eye illness as a child. “Instead of being freaked out about it, I fell in love with everything the doctors were doing,” Lopez said. “I started asking all the doctors and medical students questions. I’ve been interested in ophthalmology ever since.” During high school he interned at an eye clinic at Miami Veteran’s Affairs Healthcare System and co-authored a paper published in Vision journal.
