For the eighth consecutive year, five universities in the State University System of Florida have been named among the Top 100 Worldwide Universities by the National Academy of Inventors. The list, established at the University of South Florida, highlights institutions recognized for their achievements in securing utility patents.

The rankings reflect patent activity during 2024. Four universities within the system improved their positions compared to last year, while one maintained its previous ranking. The University of Florida remained at 13th place. The University of South Florida moved up to 26th from 34th in 2023. The University of Central Florida advanced to 34th from 52nd, and Florida International University rose to 42nd from 57th. Florida State University climbed significantly, reaching 55th from its previous position at 90th.

Chancellor Rodrigues of the State University System commented on the achievement: “This achievement recognizes the real-world impact of administrators, faculty, and students who are focused on innovation and not indoctrination. Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature have recently invested more than $200M to recruit and retain top-tier faculty; this is just another example of how Florida’s efforts are paying off,” said Chancellor Rodrigues of the State University System. “These rankings show our System’s commitment to invention, research, and innovation, which leads to increased commercialization for our local communities, our state, and the nation.”

The Top 100 Worldwide Universities List is based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It considers only utility patents granted during a given calendar year and includes all assignees listed for each patent. According to organizers, being granted a high number of patents does not necessarily measure a university’s technology value or research effectiveness.
