The Young Workers Committee of IAM Union Local 2198 in Houston recently led a winter blanket drive to support individuals experiencing homelessness. Working with the local’s Community Service Committee, the initiative collected enough donations from members to fill 30 bags with blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets for distribution ahead of the colder months.

Key participants included Young Workers Chairperson Quintarius Oliver and committee members Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. The Community Service Committee was represented by Chairperson Albert Harmason along with Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges.

This project is part of a broader effort by the Local 2198 Young Workers Committee to engage in community service across Houston. In addition to the blanket drive, they organized their first Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser. The event brought together union members, families, and supporters; proceeds benefited Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines to help provide services at no cost for recipients.

The committee also collaborated with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School in Houston, donating over 50 backpacks filled with supplies for students before the start of the school year.

“This is a powerful example of union values in action,” said IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”

IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez highlighted the influence young members have on outreach efforts: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members. From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”

Dee Colbert, IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director, stated: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities. The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”
