IAM union members at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico have voted to retain their union representation, defeating a decertification effort led by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation. The vote comes after a period of stalled contract negotiations between workers and management, with the process reportedly delayed for nearly three years.

The outcome is seen as a statement from technicians at the Aguadilla-based facility about their desire for continued collective bargaining and improved working conditions. Workers have consistently called on Lufthansa Technik to negotiate a fair contract that recognizes their skills and contributions to aviation safety.

More than 200 mechanics and related employees joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in May 2022. Since then, they have sought to secure better terms of employment. However, management has been accused of delaying talks and not responding adequately to workers’ demands. In 2023, the IAM requested intervention from the National Mediation Board as a federal mediator in the dispute. Additionally, Verdi, a German union representing Lufthansa employees in Europe, has asked Lufthansa AG—Lufthansa Technik’s parent company—to help resolve ongoing contract issues in Puerto Rico.

The IAM contends that the decertification attempt was part of broader efforts by management to delay reaching an agreement while benefiting from workers’ expertise without offering improvements in compensation or working conditions.

“IAM International President Brian Bryant stated: ‘Lufthansa Technik must now come to the table ready to negotiate a contract that honors these workers’ skills and contributions. The workers have spoken loudly and clearly: they want respect, they want stability, and they want a fair contract. The IAM will not rest until they get the contract they deserve.’”

Craig Martin, IAM Southern Territory General Vice President, commented: “This vote is a powerful testament to what solidarity can achieve. Lufthansa Technik workers stood together against outside interference and made it clear that they want a strong union fighting for them at the table. Now it’s time for the company to respect that mandate and bargain in good faith.”

Richie Johnsen, IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President, said: “Our members in Puerto Rico showed tremendous resolve in the face of intimidation and delay tactics. They know their worth, and they know that union representation is the path to better wages, safer working conditions, and a more secure future. Their unity is inspiring, and the IAM is with them every step of the way.”

Aircraft mechanic Ilianalyn Delgado added: “We stayed united because we know what we bring to this company. We keep these aircraft flying safely. We deserve respect, a voice on the job, and a contract that reflects our work. This vote shows we’re not backing down.”

The IAM has called on Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico management to stop stalling tactics and return to negotiations prepared for an agreement that meets workers’ expectations.
