Georgina Bonsu, a new student at Florida International University (FIU), has chosen to major in disaster management as she pursues her goal of becoming an OBGYN and working in international health. Bonsu, who graduated from Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, Florida, says her interests span medicine, policy, and law.

“I want to become a doctor, specifically an OBGYN,” Bonsu said. “I would love to work in maternal health. I’m also interested in international law and global health. Disaster management is a way to start bridging these interests. It’s also a unique path into medicine. I just thought it was really cool.”

During high school, Bonsu served as president of the African Student Union and the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) chapter at her school. In these roles, she organized community events such as a festival with about 100 attendees and led activities that promoted awareness about tobacco use among students.

“We were talking about the topic of stress,” she said. “Instead of smoking, why not try something like making slime? We were trying to help the students find ways to replace smoking with fun habits and activities.”

Bonsu was also involved in her school’s theatre club as treasurer and stage manager for various performances at district competitions and regional conferences. She volunteered at Advent Health Hospital where she assisted nurses and interacted with patients.

Her academic background includes participation in the International Baccalaureate program, pre-med studies, and playing lacrosse.

When considering colleges, Bonsu was drawn to FIU’s emphasis on international education. With family roots in Ghana, she aims to contribute to medical and public health efforts globally.

“I want to help countries that are in need,” she said.

Bonsu believes her disaster management degree will give her skills applicable both in medicine and international public health projects. As she begins her first semester at FIU this fall, she looks forward to joining campus organizations.

“The clubs and student organizations are here to us help us get started and get connected,” Bonsu said. “I’m looking forward to being involved and meeting new people.”
