Shalimar Beach Resort on Sanibel Island will reopen to guests on September 28, 2025. The reopening date marks three years since Hurricane Ian struck the area, causing significant destruction to the resort and much of the island.

The resort was completely destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022. Since then, it has been rebuilt from the ground up. According to Shalimar Beach Resort, this is the first hotel construction project completed on Sanibel Island in more than four decades. The new accommodations are designed for comfort and resilience against future storms while maintaining the traditional style associated with Sanibel.

Guests at the reopened resort will have access to 33 newly built units, including private one- and two-bedroom villas with direct Gulf views and hotel studios with partial water views. Other amenities include a beachfront saltwater pool that is heated year-round, a rooftop terrace offering sunrise and sunset views, fully equipped kitchens and screened lanais in every unit, as well as 360 feet of private beach.

Additional features available for guests include a community barbecue and picnic area, bike and paddle board rentals, cabana rentals, and staff certified under “Guests First Gold” standards.

Shalimar Beach Resort was originally established in 1959. It remains operated by a fourth-generation family who have longstanding ties to both the property and Sanibel Island itself.

“Hurricane Ian tested us in every possible way, but it also clarified our purpose,” says Shalimar’s owner, Sean Niesel. “Shalimar’s rebuild isn’t just about what we lost, but what we’ve gained: strength, perspective, and a renewed commitment to hospitality. As Sanibel Island visitors since 1990, we take great pride in being part of the island’s future for generations to come.”

The owners say their decision to rebuild was motivated by personal connections as well as a desire for future generations—both their own family members and returning guests—to continue enjoying visits to Sanibel.

Reservations for stays beginning in fall 2025 are now open through www.shalimar.com or by phone at (239) 472-1353.
