The U.S. Census Bureau has released preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances, offering an early look at public school spending per pupil for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The initial findings also include state-level summary statistics on revenues and expenditures for public school systems during the 2024 fiscal year.

According to the Census Bureau, fiscal years are not consistent across all school systems, and the survey data have not been adjusted to standardize reporting periods. The agency notes that these preliminary figures may change before the final data set is published.

The Census Bureau plans to release the finalized data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.
